Two years after Dr.Church’s retirement from Dwight and Co. Dr. Church helped his sons develop Church and Co. where they marketed their product under the name Arm and Hammer.
Dwight and Co. and Church and Co., while in competition with each other, were still family. So in 1869 the two family companies joined forces to form Church and Dwight Co. Together they chose the Arm and Hammer logo to represent them.
The trademark includes the Arm of Vulcan, the Roman God of fire and metallurgy, preparing to strike an anvil.
Now common in American homes the150 year old brand can be found on toothpaste, air fresheners, kitty litter and household cleaners of all sorts.
Tip: Use baking soda to make clay
Try this fun easy to make clay for a craft project that takes minutes to make and provides hours of entertainment. Allow the clay to dry overnight and then paint.
Baking soda clay
- 1c baking soda
- 1/2c cornstarch
- 2/3c warm water
- 2-4 drops essential oil (optional)
Mix all together in a sauce pan and stirring constantly, bring to a boil over med high heat.
Stir until the consistency is like loose mashed potatoes.
Transfer to a tray to cool slightly. When cool enough to handle, knead a couple of times until smooth. Play time!
If left to air dry, projects will dry white and are paintable.
Wrap any leftover clay in plastic and keep air tight.

Baking soda is sodium bnairboacte plus an acid (I think tartaric, but I’m not sure). Add some acid to your recipe, like lemon juice (like 1 tablespoon), vinegar, buttermilk.
